Although quite a few desktop and laptop users in Victorville and across the High Desert area have taken up Microsoft’s free offer to upgrade their operating systems to Windows 10, many others have chosen to stick with Windows 7.

Factors Involved when Considering Operating System Upgrades

For some users who own older hardware, upgrading to Windows 10 is not an option. For example, the Dell Inspiron 1545 laptops from 2009 are reasonably powerful under Windows 7, but their chipset configurations do not support upgrading to Windows 10. Some desktop PCs from this era may be able to handle Windows 10 as long as their hardware is upgraded extensively.

Not being able to upgrade to Windows 10 at this time does not mean that you have to retire your system and buy a new computer. At this time, Windows 7 has been around for seven years, but it is not ready to be retired. Microsoft is ready to continue to provide support until the end of this decade, and there is a chance that you might still be able to use your hardware for a few more months after the year 2020.

If you decide to stick with Windows 7 until 2020, there are a few things you need to keep in mind:

Security Updates

If your Windows Update service seems to have stopped working, you may have to apply a special fix called Microsoft Security Update KB3153199. Contact PC Performance Pros if you need help with this. It is very important for your desktop or laptop to be able to connect to Windows Update since malicious hackers will try to find as many exploits as possible from now until 2020.

System Performance

If you want to enjoy your legacy desktop or laptop until the time is right to get a new computer, you will need to make sure that the system is free of any issues. You have two options; the first is to bring your system to PC Performance Pros and get the High Desert PC Tune-Up, which includes virus removal, registry optimization, and driver update. If you have a desktop PC, our technicians can also determine if a sensible hardware upgrade can be performed so that a Windows 10 upgrade can be applied.

You can also choose to backup your data so that a fresh installation of Windows 7 and all its system updates can be applied. Your desktop or laptop will feel like new after the reinstall is completed.
